Anne de la Green Gables Vol. 1

Anne Shirley is an orphan of eleven who finds a home by chance. Marilla and Matthew are sister and brother. Neither has wed. They wanted a boy to help with farm and house work. A mix-up brings Anne to Green Gables in Avonlea instead. It lies on Canada's Prince Edward Island. Marilla plans to send her back, but pity changes her mind.

This novel for children tells how Anne grows up. She is thin, with freckles, red hair, and a warm heart. She has a quick temper and talks a great deal. She loves to dream, which brings both joy and trouble. Mrs Lynde makes a hurtful comment about her looks. Anne insults her in turn. A boy in her class mocks her hair. She hits him with her slate. Anne dislikes her freckles. She wishes she looked like Diana, her best friend. Yet she finds beauty in trees in bloom and bright lake water. She names these places from her dreams.

Anne learns to hold back and to forgive. She learns to respect herself and others. She leaves the village school and goes to college. She wins the Avery scholarship for literature. Matthew dies, and Marilla falls ill. These events lead Anne to give up the scholarship. She takes a teaching job in Avonlea to stay near Marilla.
