Description

Magic has taken the place of science and technology. Lana Bingham works spells in a loft with her lover, Max. Dark powers threaten them both. Even people they know may pose a threat. Patrols hunt through the ruined streets of New York. Neither the immune nor those with special gifts are safe. Lana and Max must try to flee the city.

Nora Roberts’s novel blends fantasy with a tale of survival. It takes place after society has fallen apart. It follows several people who head west into an uncertain world. Chuck has a gift for tech. But he must adapt to life without the old systems. Arlys works as a journalist but has lost her audience. She still records the truth on paper. Her young colleague Fred has strange powers and still holds hope. Rachel, a doctor who finds ways to cope, fights despair. So does Jonah, a paramedic who gives emergency care. They strive to keep a young mother and her three babies alive.

The story explores trust, fear, and the chance to start again. Strangers may offer help or pose a deadly threat. The travelers do not yet know where they are going or why. Yet a shared goal awaits them. It will shape the future of those who survive.
