Dick Sand must lead the brig Pilgrim after a tragedy. The brave, bright teen is the only sailor left aboard. Mrs Weldon, the shipowner’s wife, sails with her son Jack. Cousin Benedict, the cook Negoro, and the dog Dingo join them. The group also takes in Black people saved from a wreck.

They set out for the United States. But Negoro changes their course in secret. He steers the ship towards Africa instead. Dick must use his skills and knowledge to face danger. Traps and other threats block the group’s path home.
