Description

In Paris in 2018, a young writer from Senegal finds a long-lost novel. The book dates from 1938. It draws Diégane Latyr Faye deep into its world. Its author, T.C. Elimane, left public view amid a scandal over its release. Diégane sets out to trace his life. His search leads him to colonialism and the Holocaust.

Diégane also meets with other young African writers in Paris. They debate, drink, and have affairs. They ask why they write while living in exile. He grows close to two women as well. Siga knows secrets about Elimane. Aïda works as a photojournalist, who reports news through photos.

Mohamed Mbougar Sarr tells a mystery about books and writing. It also follows a young writer seeking his path. The novel uses accounts, witness statements, and written records. The story spans Dakar, Amsterdam, and Buenos Aires. Family ties, politics, and art all shape the tale. So do the great disasters of the twentieth century. It suits readers who like novels about writers and exile. It also speaks to those drawn to books about literature.

Sarr was born in Senegal in 1990. He trained at a military school in Saint-Louis. He then moved to France. At EHESS, he studied literature and philosophy. He lives in Paris. His past fiction won several awards. In 2018, he became the youngest winner of the Prix Littérature-Monde. This is his fourth novel. It won the 2021 Prix Goncourt. It also won the Prix Transfuge for best French-language novel.

The book's first title was La plus secrète mémoire des hommes. This edition forms part of the ANANSI. WORLD FICTION series.
