Description
Leo Tolstoy’s Childhood, Boyhood, Youth traces his early life. It goes up to his years at university. He blends his own life with fiction, not strict memoir. He recalls the past and takes a frank look at himself. He also asks broad questions about life.
Tolstoy finished the book in 1856. It was his first work to appear in print. He draws on Stendhal in his approach. He tests the line between fact and made-up events. His prose is plain but vivid. These linked accounts show his growth as a person and writer.
