Description

Constantin Crânganu looks at how Earth's climate has changed. He spans its full 4.6-billion-year past. Natural shifts can last tens of years or millions. He also looks at how humans affect the climate. This includes land use, greenhouse gases and particles in the air.

This nonfiction book argues a case on climate science and policy. It covers shale gas and public debate in Europe and North America. He argues that fossil fuels are not the sole cause of climate change. He questions the focus on the world's mean temperature. He also questions the focus on carbon emissions since the industrial age began. He disputes claims that human emissions explain each unusual weather event. He calls for steps that work and do not cost too much. He rejects forecasts of doom. He argues that people can cope with climate risks better now. His point of comparison is 150 years ago.

Crânganu studies rocks and Earth's physics at City University of New York. His fields are geology and geophysics. He teaches environmental science at Brooklyn College. He taught geophysics in Iași from 1980 to 1993.

In 1993, he did Fulbright research at Oklahoma. He studied pressure in sedimentary basins and Earth's heat. He also studied ways to extract methane hydrates. He joined City University in 2001. He then began to use AI in earth science. This work includes petrophysics, the study of rocks' physical traits. It also includes the study of water. Since 2004, he has taught and done research on climate change. He has also published work on it. A second Fulbright award brought him back to Iași in 2018.
