Description

Archaeologist Louise Cantor doubts that her son Henrik took his own life. After he turns up dead in his flat, she searches for clues. Small details lead her to suspect a darker cause. A photo of a woman she does not know takes her to Mozambique. There, fear surrounds an AIDS clinic set up by an American businessman. Even its patients seem afraid. Louise begins to see a threat that reaches beyond her son's death.

This Nordic noir novel by Henning Mankell follows a mother's search for the truth. It suits readers of crime fiction shaped by grief and suspicion.

Mankell's own life links Sweden and Africa. Born in Stockholm on 3 February 1948, he grew up in Sveg. He wanted to write from a young age and loved theatre. In 1966, he began work as an assistant director at Stockholm's Riks Theater. During the 1970s, he protested against the Vietnam War and apartheid in South Africa. He lived in Zambia and other African countries. He later became artistic director of the Avenido theatre in Maputo. He divided his time between Mozambique and Sweden.
