Description
Brian Cox and Jeff Forshaw explain Einstein’s equation E = mc². They show the steps that lead to it. They use little maths. This is a science book for non-experts. You need no training in physics. You only need to know Pythagoras’ theorem.
They then ask what mass means in physics today. They cover the Standard Model. They also explain gauge invariance and the Higgs mechanism. The last chapter deals with general relativity and gravity. It gives readers a feel for how they work. The authors show that Einstein’s work need not take rare gifts. They stress his urge to ask questions and think of new ideas. He also had the drive to see ideas through.
Both teach particle physics at the University of Manchester. Cox also shares science through BBC shows. He took part in CERN’s ATLAS experiment. It helped find the Higgs particle. Forshaw has written more than a hundred science papers. Most deal with quantum chromodynamics. He has won awards. These include the Maxwell Medal and the Kelvin Prize.
Iulian Comanescu translated this edition from English. The book forms part of the Humanitas science series.
