Domnul Președinte

Asturias began the novel in 1920 while studying law. He finished it in 1933. It became his best-known work, with versions in many tongues. It has also reached the stage and screen. It suits readers drawn to fiction about power and unjust rule.

Asturias (1899–1974) served as a diplomat and wrote novels, poems and plays. He helped lay the ground for the Latin American literary boom. His work looks at gaps in social rank and wealth. It also explores abuses by those who rule Latin American states. He was among the first to use magical realism.

He earned his degree at San Carlos University in Guatemala. As a student, he opposed the harsh rule of Estrada Cabrera. He founded and led the Popular University, then left for Europe. There, he lived through events that would reshape the continent. At the Sorbonne, he studied Maya culture with Georges Raynaud.

He returned to Guatemala in 1933 and founded Diario del Aire. It was the country’s first radio newspaper. He served as a diplomat in the years of revolution, 1944–1954. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1967. He died in Madrid on 9 June 1974. His remains lie in Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.
