Emma

Emma Woodhouse has wealth, good looks, and a sharp mind. She enjoys a warm home and her father's love. She sees no need to seek a husband herself. Yet she loves to choose partners for those around her. Their feelings soon fail to fit her plans. Even her own heart takes her by surprise. While she pursues other people's matches, she almost misses her own chance at joy.

Jane Austen's novel explores love, marriage, and the ties between people. It suits readers drawn to stories of courtship and daily life. Emma's wealth sets her apart from Austen's less well-off heroines.

Austen began writing while young. Her wit and close study of everyday lives draw readers across age groups. Her work helped shape the modern novel. Rudyard Kipling, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature, admired her writing.

The novel has inspired many screen versions. Gwyneth Paltrow played Emma in a 1996 film that won two Oscars. A version starring Anya Taylor-Joy opened on 14 February 2020. It earned $25 million at the box office.
