Description

Summer brings ripe cherries, bare feet and bursts of rain. Plants wilt in the heat, then revive when showers come. Known faces return for new tales, and new faces join them.

This picture book suits children from age two to school age. Parents can share it with them, as can grandparents. Scenes link up, so readers can follow several stories across pages. Some story threads go on into the next volume. Children can point out people and talk about each scene. They can also find new details as they look. Rotraut Susanne Berner hides a mouse on each page, too.

This is one of four books about the seasons. The same cast returns as the world around them changes. Through scenes of daily life, children can explore these changes. Shared reading helps them build memory, focus and word skills. It also gives them room to dream up and tell stories.

Berner writes the books and draws the art. The summer book won a German book-of-the-year honor in 2006. It has also reached its nineteenth edition.
