Marguerite de la Roque is a young girl from a proud noble family. Her parents died when she was very small, and she does not remember them. She is bold and stubborn. Her kind old nurse, Damienne, tries hard to teach her good manners, and the girl often lets her down.

Hard trials lie ahead for them both. Marguerite's guardian is her powerful cousin, Jean-François de Roberval. He takes control of her rich inheritance. Then he tries to crush her will as well.

This is a historical novel about how Marguerite survives. Her story draws on real events. Writers of the Age of Discovery recorded them in their accounts. The plot is both frightening and striking. A rich period setting and a careful old-style voice shape the telling, and the result reads like a woven tapestry. The Russian edition credits the author as A. Goodman.
