Literatura și valorile

Literatura și valorile asks how books and ethics give life meaning. Ethics deals with right and wrong. The book asks how people find purpose in a group. It looks at moral choices and conflicts, too. People may solve these conflicts or fail to do so. This work of literary criticism links these points to moral thought.

Monica Onojescu leads the work on this volume. Vasile Morar shows a key difference between ethics and stories. Moral faiths and schools of thought set ideals for life. They seek to make deeds fit the beliefs that guide them. These include Judaism and Socratic thought. They also include Buddhism, Confucianism, Christianity and Islam. Each sets out how people should live.

Stories, too, ask what makes a life hold together. But their characters need not show us how to be good. The book thus sets moral rules apart from stories. It shows how stories explore what people live through.
