Description
Martin Hill almost wins the role of Harry Potter. David Foenkinos’s novel follows the boy who loses that chance. Casting starts in 1999, with hundreds of actors trying out. By the last round, only Martin and one rival remain.
Born in London in 1989, Martin grows up between two cities. His parents split up, leaving him between London and Paris. His French mother, Jeanne, works as a journalist. His father, John, designs film sets and makes odd inventions. While Martin visits a set with his father, a producer spots him. The producer works on the first Harry Potter film. Martin passes several rounds and starts to picture himself in the role. He feels he has much in common with the young wizard. But the other boy gives the stronger audition.
The loss leaves Martin struggling with the future he had imagined. Each new Potter book and film brings his rival’s fame back into view. He feels that someone else has taken his life. With a wistful tone and touches of fantasy, the novel explores failure and lost hopes. It asks how someone can move on from near success.
This edition includes a translation and notes by Iuliana Glăvan. It forms part of the Raftul Denisei series.
