От саванны до дивана: Эволюционная история кошек

This book tells the story of how cats evolved. It follows them from the African savanna to our homes. The author is Jonathan Losos, an evolutionary biologist.

The book asks many small questions. Do lions and tigers meow, and if not, why not? Where did cats make their big evolutionary leap after leaving Africa? Why does a pet cat leave a dead mouse at your feet? Is it a bad idea to keep an ocelot at home? What did cats mean in Egyptian hieroglyphs?

Losos shows how scientists study the cat's past and present today. They use GPS tracking to follow cats. They read cat genomes. They also use forensic archaeology. The book explains how natural and artificial selection shaped the modern house cat. This took place over the last few thousand years. In that short time, the cat became one of the most widespread and varied species on Earth.

The book also looks at how people change cats and how cats change the world around them. It closes with a look at the future of both Felis catus and Homo sapiens.

This is popular science for general readers who like cats or biology. This edition is a Russian translation in paperback. Альпина Паблишер published it in 2025.
