Description

A cat bears the cost of a town’s deal with the Devil. In Beaugency, on the Loire, the townspeople need a bridge. The Devil offers to build it in one night. In return, he demands the first creature to cross it. The cat learns its fate too late and cries out.

James Joyce retells this old French tale with humor for children. He frames it as a letter to his young grandson, Stephen. Joyce also wrote Ulise. This edition presents Radu Paraschivescu’s Romanian translation of The Cat and the Devil. Lelis supplies the color illustrations.
