Chaya Lindner is a young woman from Kraków. During the Second World War, Nazi forces rule Poland. She joins a group that fights their rule in secret. She carries messages for the group and helps its work to save people in Jewish ghettos. Arrests spread, as do forced moves and mass killings. Yet she does not give up hope.

Jennifer A. Nielsen wrote this novel for young adult readers. It takes place in the past. We see the war through Chaya’s eyes. We see how cruel the Nazis are, and how brave ordinary people can be. Her risky tasks test her will to go on. They also build her trust in her work. The story looks at loyalty and what people give up for others. It shows the strength of those whose names history may forget. The book won the Whitney Award.
