Good to know
Where should I start if I've never read philosophy?
The Stoics are a good start: Marcus Aurelius's "Meditations" and Seneca's "Letters from a Stoic" can be read in short passages and deal with everyday problems. Alain de Botton's "The Consolations of Philosophy" is a friendly introduction, and Plato's "Apology" is a short text that leads into the dialogues.
Does the edition or translation matter?
More than with a novel. In philosophy, a term translated differently can change the meaning of an idea, and notes and an introduction help you follow the argument. Before you buy, check the translator and whether the edition has notes, especially for demanding writers like Kant.
