Description

Peter Frankopan views world history through the Silk Roads. He looks at the lands along these routes. His account runs from ancient times to the present. He asks why empires grew and fell. He tracks how goods and ideas crossed borders.

This work of world history turns toward Asia. Central Asia, China and India form its core. He links their past power to their growing role today. He shows how they shape trade across the world. He also looks at their role in politics and culture. He contrasts this with wealth's long pull in the Americas.

He draws on texts in many tongues. He uses Greek and Latin texts in his research. He also uses texts in several modern European languages. Other sources use Arabic, Turkish, Persian and Hebrew. He draws on Aramaic and Chinese texts too.

Frankopan teaches world history at Oxford. He leads its centre for Byzantine research too. He is also a senior researcher at Worcester College. He has taught at universities in Britain and America.

Smaranda Campeanu helped translate this edition. Smaranda Nistor and Bogdan Perdivara also worked on the translation.
