Description

This book teaches the Italian used today, at work and in daily life. Paul Teodorescu wrote it for adults who speak Romanian. They can use it to learn without a teacher. The course uses texts, talks, grammar rules and tasks.

It draws on the close ties between Italian and Romanian. It compares their words, idioms and grammar. Texts from several fields teach a wide range of words. They also teach readers about Italian culture. Some texts come from well-known works of prose and verse. Each lesson teaches grammar in steps, with examples and tasks. After each group of lessons, reviews cover the harder points. Lists at the back give Italian words with Romanian meanings. They also give Romanian words with Italian meanings. Answers to the tasks are there too.

This fourth edition makes changes and brings the course up to date. It came out 33 years after the book first appeared.

Paul G. Teodorescu was born in 1932. He was a linguist who studied Romance languages. Romania expelled him in 1968. Before then, he published books for language learners. He also put out books of collected works and translations. He translated from Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.

He later held posts abroad at schools of higher learning. These posts included work at universities. He worked in Rome, Dublin, London and Buenos Aires. He also worked at universities in Ohio and Oregon. Other posts took him to Colorado and California.

Teodorescu founded the Romanian Studies Association of America. He was its first president from 1971 to 1979. He also led its journal, Yearbook of Romanian Studies. He wrote about Romanian culture, including lives of poets and writers. He wrote for the Columbia Dictionary of European Literature too. He also studied how Romanian words changed from 1948 to 1978.
