Description
Jennette McCurdy tells of her life as a child actor. She shows how her mother ruled her life. This memoir deals with eating disorders, addiction, and shame. It also shows her fight to be free. She writes with frankness and dark humor about her pain.
McCurdy first tried out for a role at six. Her mother hoped her only daughter would be a star. To please her, McCurdy ate little. She weighed herself five times each day. Her mother forced her to have beauty treatments. She washed McCurdy in the shower until she was sixteen. She claimed the right to read her diaries and emails. She also sought access to all her earnings.
McCurdy found fame through a role in Nickelodeon's iCarly. But the role made her distress worse. Her mother welcomed fan clubs and the press photographers called paparazzi. McCurdy felt anxious and came to hate herself. She had eating disorders and struggled with addiction. She also had bonds with others that caused her harm. She later starred with Ariana Grande in Sam & Cat. That show was an iCarly spin-off. Soon after, her mother died of cancer. Her problems then grew worse.
The memoir follows her as she seeks therapy and quits acting. She starts to heal and find out what she wants. She links freedom to control of her own daily care. This includes even small, private acts. Lucia Popovici made this edition's translation from English.
