Description

This is the second volume on the Habsburg Empire’s peoples. It starts with the revolutions of 1848. It ends with the First World War. The essays show how cultures mixed in one state. They trace how ethnic groups sought to change their sense of who they were.

This work of history is for readers drawn to the empire’s many peoples. It looks at how Austrian rule left its mark on Romanian lands. It also looks at ties between the Kingdom of Romania and the empire. Readers can compare these studies with work by Romanian historians.

The book is part of a shorter, six-volume form of Die Habsburgermonarchie 1848‑1918. The original work comes from a commission at the Austrian Academy of Sciences. That group studies the monarchy’s history.

Rudolf Gräf led the work on this Romanian edition. He also edited it. Loránd Mádly and Raluca Nelepcu helped translate it. So did Nicolae Teșculă and Ioana Florea. The Romanian Academy’s Centre for Transylvanian Studies shares in publishing this edition.
