Portretul unei doamne

Isabel Archer leaves America to spend time in Europe. Her rich aunt asks her to join this new world. Isabel is young, full of life, and beautiful. She prizes her freedom but knows little of life. Those around her care most about their own needs. They put her freedom at risk.

Henry James shows how Americans and Europeans wield power over each other. He does the same for men and women. He links how people act in public with their private lives. Their fine manners hide a world of control and harm. The novel uses psychological realism to show how people think and feel. It suits fans of classic fiction about character and power.

Cristina Jinga put the English text into Romanian. This edition forms part of the Corint Clasici ai Literaturii series. It has an introduction by Anca Peiu and James's own preface. A chronology, which lists events in time order, comes before the novel.
