Description
C.G. Jung takes a close look at Așa grăit-a Zarathustra. He links its insights to Nietzsche’s mental struggles. He finds signs of genius and neurosis. He also finds prepsychotic states: states before psychosis. These talks link the study of the mind with philosophy.
Jung first heard tales of Nietzsche as a youth in Basel. His odd ways, gifts, and illness drew Jung’s interest. They troubled him too. Jung read Nietzsche as a student. Those ideas helped shape his later work. Nietzsche’s grasp of human nature helped ground Jung’s own ideas.
Jung shows how Nietzsche first fought old values. He then turned to creative work. Nietzsche began to write Zarathustra in 1883, at age 39. Jung sees its main figure as Nietzsche’s second self. Yet he says Nietzsche still saw the two as distinct.
The book records private talks with Zürich’s Psychological Club members. No one meant the notes for print. This gave Jung room to speak his mind. He jokes and shares his gripes. He talks of politics and money as fascism gains ground.
Jung was Swiss. He worked as a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. He founded the field of analytical psychology. His ideas include the collective unconscious and archetypes. They also include complexes and the shadow. Other ideas include introversion and extraversion. He also explored anima, animus, and active imagination.
This first volume covers the seminar held from 1934 to 1939. James L. Jarrett edited it. Bogdan-Alexandru Stănescu translated it from English. It belongs to the series Misterele inconștientului colectiv.
