Amanda and Clay take their children away from New York. They rent a luxury home on Long Island for a week. They stock up on food, sweets, and costly drinks. The adults enjoy the pool while their children watch screens.

That night, an older Black couple arrive at the door. Ruth and G. H. own the house but have never met their guests. They bring news of a power cut across New York. As fears grow, both families must decide whom to trust. They cannot tell whether the remote house offers safety. Nor do they know what has happened beyond it.

Rumaan Alam blends suspense with a novel of ideas. It suits readers drawn to family life under strain. The story explores race, class, marriage, and the demands of raising children. It questions consumer culture and how people define success. A growing crisis tests the values that guide both families.

This translation follows the novel originally titled Leave the World Behind, a National Book Award finalist. Alam studied creative writing at Oberlin College and lives in New York. His work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. He has also written for New York Magazine, Buzzfeed, and The New Republic. He hosts two podcasts for Slate.
