Ivo Andric's short stories explore what makes people act as they do. His tales give a strong sense of past times and places. He uses a light touch to deal with serious themes. The tales seem simple but show how people's minds work.

The book suits readers who like short tales of the past and of life as it is. Andric blends Western ways of telling tales with Eastern verse and details of its culture. His tales also have traits found in Bosnian folk tales. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1961. This book is part of the Biblioteca deschisă series.
